There are two types of acrylics suitable for use with a laser: cast and extruded. Dark acrylic is required for the S1 as it cannot cut clear acrylic.
Cast acrylic sheets are produced from liquid acrylic poured into molds, allowing them to be formed into various shapes and sizes. This type is commonly used for most market awards. Cast acrylic is excellent for engraving because it turns a frosty white color when engraved. While it can be laser-cut, the edges will not be flame-polished. Therefore, cast acrylic is better suited for engraving.
Extruded acrylic, on the other hand, is a popular choice for cutting materials used in signs and promotional products. This type is manufactured through a high-volume process, making it generally less expensive than cast acrylic. Extruded acrylic interacts differently with the laser beam, resulting in clean, smooth cuts with flame-polished edges. However, when engraved, it produces a clear rather than frosted appearance.
